Actress Lynda Carter has a message for Megan Fox: Stop ragging on Wonder Woman!

While interviewed in Fox News (poor thing) host Brian Kilmeade brought up the possibility of Megan Fox stepping into Carter’s boots, the actress had a bone to pick with the suggestion.

“Megan Fox actually kind of trashed Wonder Woman,” Carter said. “She said she thought it was dumb, like ‘what’s the big whoop making people tell the truth.’ I like her, I just thought she shouldn’t trash Wonder Woman.”

Last year, when rumors began circulating that Fox was under consideration for the role, she told the London Times that Wonder Woman was a “lame superhero.”

“She flies around in her invisible jet and her weaponry is a lasso that makes you tell the truth,” Fox said. “I just don’t get it. Somebody has a big challenge on their hands whoever takes that role but I don’t want to do it.”

As for the actual new TV show she is excited at the prospect of Kelly developing the series.

“He’s great at the underlying comedy and character development,” she said of Kelly. “I spoke to him several weeks ago and he is perfect for it because he will really give the characters life. It’s not just going to be a cartoon or a comic book thing, which is really what I think we tried to do.”

But she played coy as to whether or not she would be in the show, saying simply, “I don’t know.”

There is going to be a TV series!

Deadline Hollywood and The Hollywood Reporter reported last Friday that DC Entertainment is optioning a television show. The other part of the news is that David E. Kelly has a deal with Warner Bros. Television to create the new Wonder Woman television show.

There is still no word on where the show will air or when it might premiere.

also, Deadline Hollywood adds

Details on the reboot are being kept under wraps, and it is not clear if the new Wonder Woman aka Diana Prince will keep her signature powers and weapons, including her Lasso of Truth, her indestructible bracelets, her tiara and her invisible airplane

First David E. Kelly is a great TV series developer. Creator of two great TV shows I love: Ally McBeal and Boston Public. Most of David E. Kelly’s output has been in the realm of legal dramas, and that makes sense, after all Wonder Woman is an ambassador, and that is a good lead to have a show focusing of the diplomatic conflicts, difference of politics, feminism, and clash ideals. However its also a bit worrisome because the guy lacks experience with Sci-Fi TV, which really makes me worry about which direction the show will take… specially since the NEW version of wonder woman debuted on the comics.

The combination of Wonder Woman and the medium of television is not as successful as for superman or batman either, while both batman and superman appeared in the medium through serials and cartoon early on, wonder woman was not adapted in the era of black and white, she was not part of filmation’s DC heroes lineup, and the two first attempts a a TV series were more on the side of the bizarre. However the character did hit gold with the classic television series starring Lynda Carter, which ran from 1976-1979; A series was largely faithful of the Wonder Woman tradition, depicting the heroine in her proper costume, flying an invisible plane and beating up bad guys.

While the knowledge that someone is doing Something with the character makes feel fuzzy and warm inside. There is also the hard cold truth that there is NOT going to be a wonder woman Movie. Not for a while… But there should still be made.

Citing some comments from the web:

Why do we need a Wonder Woman movie? Because we don’t have any superhero movies with a strong, solo, female protagonist. Don’t talk to me about Elektra and Catwoman. If you mention My Super Ex-Girlfriend, I just might gouge my eyes out with a spoon. And if you tell me that women cannot headline action movies, I will point you to Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and Kill Bill, and send you home. We need a Wonder Woman movie because we don’t have any other female superheroes that are strong enough to headline in a solo film. There are no other female super heroes who are not part of a team who have the mainstream recognition to even half-way pull it off.

After some misquoting of DC and warner directives that hinted plans for DC movie were to be reveled during the next month, DC’s Diane Nelson cleared the reality with some disappointing statement.

The news a CBR:

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson was asked what exactly we can expect to hear in a months time and her answer was more than a little disappointing. “so we’re not going to be making that announcement in the next month, but we will be discussing a lot of our content plans before the end of the year,” she said.

[…]

Nelson finished by saying: “Everyone in particular being Geoff Johns who has a lot of great stuff with our divisions. So, you will hear more about that before the end of the year.” Could that be something to do with the Flash movie he’s previously talked about or even the Batgirl live action series that he alluded to during Comic Con? Be sure to share your thoughts on all these things in the usual place

Well friends, for my 2nd wonder woman Wednesday I thought I’d give you a little bit more of controversy. Specially regarding the new wonder woman costume (this week we got the second comic featuring it and also more details on the new origin). Lets discuss some of the criticisms surrounding the new wonder woman costume and origin: The one that says that the costume is a bit unpatriotic. The most recognizable face behind this complain, is of course, Fox NEWS:

From Fox News:

“Wonder Woman may have finally been given a pair of pants, but has she been stripped of her patriotism?

The new and allegedly improved Wonder Woman (a.k.a Diana Prince), has been given a head-to-toe makeover by artist Jim Lee, replacing her signature American flag decorated briefs with skintight black pants and purging the super hero of all her trappings of Americana.”

While there are (as we have heard) many reasons to hate the outfit, there are so many things wrong with this argument:

First, there is the fact that Wonder Woman is a Greek demi-goddess and not an American. Greek! That means that she probably even has an accent when she speaks. Then there’s the fact that the costume was elected more as sign of respect towards the world she visited than out of sympathy for American ideals, had she arrived in Russia, her costume wouldn’t have changed much (the USSR flag also had a star). Also there’s the fact she’s changed her costume before including once wearing an all-white dress that completely lost the flag look. The fact that, unlike Superman, she was not created to uphold American values but instead to “bring the Amazon ideals of love, peace, and sexual equality.” The fact that she was also created so that her creator, a psychologist named William Moulton Marston, could indulge in his love of sadomasochism and lived a polyamorous affair with his wife ands secretary. The fact that Fox News is looking for signs of anti-American sentiment in Wonder Woman’s costume is just plain insane!

Geekosystem was smart enough to name some of the reasons why Fox news SHOULD call the character unpatriotic.

She’s not American. She’s from a small magical island utopia. She probably counts as an illegal immigrant.

She’s from the worst kind of hippie commune: an all female hippie commune that preaches free love and sexual equality.

She’s a polytheist. The Greek gods breathed life into a clay form, and thus Diana was born. She regularly calls on the strength of Greek goddesses in battle.

She’s pro-gay rights. Ok, so I don’t know if this has ever been confirmed by a comic, but I defy anyone to come up with a compelling reason why she wouldn’t be. The Amazons are a race of all female immortals from ancient Greece. You cannot convince me that they would have a taboo about such things.

She’s pro-the UN. Her mission, ultimately, is to be an ambassador, bringing the Amazonian way of life to Man’s World.

She’s a pacifist.

And, perhaps the thing that sets her at odds with Fox News most of all, she reveres the truth, no matter its content.

What catches my attention the most is that they also quote somewhere in the article an unnamed DC comics source that claims the wonder woman costume was changed to market the movie over seas.

If that was the case, I find it troublesome. Comics are reflection of American culture there’s no doubt, they were born and created there. But within the last 70+ years these characters have been around, hundres of authors and thousands of readers have gone beyond the mere portrayal of culture through comics, to the portrayal of ideas, drams, nightmares and human experiences overall. Wonder woman is an Icon.

Something similar happens when superman stopped fighting for truth, justice and the American way. What truth if Clark Kent spends his life lying to everyone he know everyday? what justice if he is privileged among everyone he shares a planet with.? and what is the American way when he is in short words an illegal alien? And superman is still the ultimate superhero, not the reflection of political ideas, but the embodiment of virtue, the embodiment of the decision to use powers, any kind of powers for the benefit of others.

I have to say I love these characters and never in 13+ years of reading comics and never setting foot on the US of A, I have never felt them as foreign to my mindset. Unlike Marvel Comics whose characters are most of American origin and based in distinctive American cities, I believe to the many readers abroad the US, places like Metropolis and Gotham are not necessarily located in the US, they are abstractions of cities with buildings that can belong anywhere in the eastern world. Not that a reader in Mumbai is going to think metropolis is the capital of India, but surely, not a specific place foreign in the USA, outside of them, just an abstraction of a great city somewhere in the west. Marvel to achieve the universality has actually their own Indian Spiderman comic, one that lives in new Delhi instead of new York, and an incredible array of multinational ethnic characters. I guess its much like the same way Tintin does in his comics strips, we know he lives in Belgium, but the city and his house and moulinsart, are sort of ethereal… Tintin travels the word, but his home is somewhere where there are cities and cars… hence making it a universally relatable character.

I don’t need to look far for evidence that DC comic characters are relatable worldwide, the wonder woman TV show has by syndicated all over the world, the JLU toy line is a world seller, much like the licenses for the super powers were distributed all over the world for their release. There was Bat-Manga, there’s even an Indian superman movie. The dark knight is one of the greatest grossing film in the WORLD. Not because people, want to feel American, or even like America as a country, but because the characters themselves are universal.

Now the costume of wonder woman, was inspired in the American flag, but its basically covered in her golden armor that instantly catches someone eyes… and guess what, there’s no yellow in the American flag.,.. and the white that actually does take a big amount of the flag, is only in the star shorts and sometime in the boots fringe. The high percentage of yellow (gold) in the design, makes it easy to distance yourself from the sole American flag wrapping her concept, to see it for what it really is, a golden armor: belt, bracelets, breast plate and tiara adorned. She stopped being propaganda when the war ended, and since then wonder woman is not a symbol for something else, is an Iconic character of her own.

So I decided I would add Wonder Woman Wednesday to discuss wonder woman during the week, in comics, literature tv, internet and well basically any other form of media.

In the past weeks, I had the awesome experience of having Wonder Woman very actively discussed in boards, blogs, news, conferences and more, because of the recent changes to her origins and her outfit. Every single person that has ever been in touch with the character (and is still alive) has commented on the subject, be that a writer, actor, artist, journalist, etc. Which has made me really happy, as Diana is featured and talked about as much as she should be.

I’ve also learned a lot from her history, here are some specially interesting posts I’ve read:

What Wonder Woman covers tell us about ourselves

I like specially how you can tell the influence of the internet porn in the drawing of females in comics:

The 90s pre internet | The 90’s post internet

In other words, the internet has happened and so has internet porn reference.

Oddly enough, despise the controversy this isn’t the first time Diana has changed to a similar outfit, back in the early ninties, she was kicked out as an amazon and wore this:

Over here they pointed how the new costume resables something she used when she was a pritae…. yeah a pirate.

Meanwhile on Every day is like wednesday

Decided to take the geekery further, they reviewed some othe recent character re-invetions specilly thos that belonged to Quality Comics.

Such as Doll Man

For example, if the new Doll Man was going to be more of a G.I. Joe-like action figure, then naturally he’d have to wear a more G.I. Joe-like action figure costume than this and that meant clothing him in a generic version of some military gear.

There’s Uncle Sam. He gets a new coat, and occasionally puts his hair in a pony tail, and while it seems a bit silly to try and make Uncle Sam look cooler or more realistic, the changes are subtle enough that it’s nothing to get too bent out of shape over.

Here’s Phantom Lady, whose costume is basically a mildly Ultimized version of that of her predecessors

.

Most interesting was Newsarama’s blog who made detail account for basically every costume change ever suffered. Here are my favorites:

And interestigly it gives a light on old Jim Lee’s designs which I must admit were not shabby at all.

Jim lee had actually in charge of designing wonder woman for Stan re imagining of the character a few years ago:

Amazingly, here she also wears skin tight pants. (honestly I would have liked this series much better if they had been drawn in the 60’s Stan Lee’s and Steve Ditko’s era style.

I can just think that if internet was around the 70’s this costume re-imagination would have made the fandom INSANE!

The costume was designed by Bill Thomas (who worked on some Disney live action movies at the time) for an unsold TV pilot for Wonder Woman that actually was really close to the powerless agent Diana Prince comics era of the moment. While I don’t really hate this costume… Actually I liked it enough to make an animated version of it:

I hope when a movie adaptation comes along, they will skip this mistake that angers the fans and jump right to the classic costume for the adaptation.

Finally this little pic has been circling around.
